On the road

Last night we enjoyed a superb dinner at the Terrace Downs restaurant - my oven baked salmon just melted in my mouth! Some other favourites included a succulent rack of lamb, venison, steak and oriental seafood platter. Phil polished off a slice of pecan pie which he said was delectable.
We left at 10 this morning in brilliant sunshine, driving through green pastures, pine clad hills and over glacial streams always in the shadows of towering mountains.  The countryside changed subtly as we moved higher before descending into Otago through a pass between the mountains at over 9000 feet.

We stoppedat at Lake Tekapo on the edge of of Mackenzie county looking towards the snow capped majestic Mt Cook. Overlooking the paticular blue of the glacial lake is a tiny chapel and a memorial to the collie dogs without whom this area would be impossible to farm.

The mountains crowded closer as we descended the pass opening out to farmland and grapes - hugh numbers of vineyards.  The Kawaru river surges down it's deeply cut gorges leading into Queenstown.  It's been a great drive - challenging for Tim and Geoff who were driving because of the narrow, twisty roads and the erratic habits of tourists.

Our apartment is elegant and very comfortable - too tired to go out we eat gourmet piazzas washed down with the local brew or wine.
